Car and Driver magazine has just published a tire primer on all several types of tires (performance, all-season, etc.). It is worth a quick read if you are not familiar with what all of the different types there are. Usually it's not a problem if you end up buying the same exact model of tire that came with your car (tried and true, as they say?), but if you weren't satisfied with them, it is definitely worth a read to try and figure out how you want your car to ride next.
It can also be a question of climate. If you typically drive in a place with harsh conditions (rain, snow), you might want to look into a more specialized tire, though there are trade-offs (cost, adhesion, longevity) to consider as well.
